Coming into 2024, I feel rested and energized. I hosted a small gathering of family and friends on New Year’s Eve day followed by a visit to Cassell Coliseum for an exhilarating Virginia Tech women’s basketball game.

My first show of the season will be on February 10th and 11th with the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Blacksburg, We will be celebrating Valentine’s Day and I will be unveiling a new print titled The Riverbend. The Riverbend depicts the New River in Radford, Virginia. When I visited I found a tranquil place, and the nearby train passing was reminiscent of earlier times.

The arrival of the New Year also provides an opportunity for introductions. I’d would like to introduce you to the P Buckley Moss Foundation 2024 Raffle Quilt. This year’s quilt was created and made by Brenda Dahl. Tickets are now available for $3 each, or 2 for $5. You may order them through the Moss Foundation office by emailing foundation@mossfoundation.org, or by calling 800-430-1320. The drawing will be held on December 8, 2024 at the Winter Barn Show and Gallery Open House in Waynesboro, VA.

The application period for the P Buckley Moss Endowed Scholarship is now open until March 31st. 2023 is moving into a memory, and as it passes, I would like to share some highlights from this year. My year was exceptional and I have you to thank for it. We have travelled together, eaten together, shared stories and made some memories.

Around this time my family’s attention was drawn to my grandson Sean, who had been hospitalized with a previously undiagnosed heart condition. My daughter Mary flew out to Portland, OR to provide support. There were quite a few anxious moments during this time, and I am happy, relieved and thrilled to report that he responded well to treatment.

We welcomed December in Waynesboro with the final open house of the year. The Foundation Quilt Raffle came to a close and the winner was Carmen Hadley. I am pleased to report that the raffle raised $2,591.00 for children’s education. Carmen received her quilt during the 45th anniversary celebration held during my show with Gallery Art Center in Columbus, Ohio. My final show was a Christmas celebration with the Moss Gallery of Blacksburg.

In looking through my photos of the year, I have much to be thankful for. As we observe the turning of the calendar, my wish is for you to take joy in the tiniest moments of each day. They are precious.

Oh my, but it is cold outside. The groundhog says we’re in for 6 more weeks of winter. With the present chill, I’m wondering if I can get credit for a week’s worth of winter in one day. I will be staying inside today. Earlier this week I went to the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Blacksburg for a visit. They are preparing for my Valentine’s show, February 11th and 12th, and I managed to take a photo of the gift basket that they will be giving away.

Winter does afford us a period of rest. It is a great time to settle in cozy and warm and do some reading. A poem I came across recently served to remind me that for all the seemingly blandness hues of winter, there are vivid bursts of color. The title of this poem is A Winter Bluejay. It was written by Sara Teasdale in the early part of the twentieth century. The overall tone of the poem is one of hope, which is why I am drawn to it. I hope you like it too.

Meet my friend and quilter Martha Williams! Over the years, she has generously donated her time and skills by making quilts for the Moss Foundation to use for fundraising. The quilt chosen for the 2023 Moss Foundation Quilt Raffle is one of hers. Like many of our quilters, I had the pleasure of meeting Martha and then spending time with her on a Moss Society trip.

The individual ticket price is $3, or 2 for $5. Similar to previous years, the quilt will accompany me to gallery shows throughout the year. You will want to see this beauty up close. The photos just don’t capture the subtle color blends. The drawing will be held at the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Waynesboro on Sunday, December 3, 2023. You need not be present to win.

I am on my way to a full recovery from my recent hip surgery. All of your kind and loving cards have helped me persevere through the rigors presented by physical therapy. Thank you! I also see the days becoming longer and I am eager for my first show of the year. I invite you to meet me at the P Buckley Moss Gallery of Blacksburg on February 11th and 12th for a Valentine’s Day celebration. Speaking of Valentine’s Day and my conundrum of naming this year’s print, we now have a title. Thank you Stephanie T. for the name Song of the Heart. I must tell you that my staff received so many good suggestions, it made the decision quite challenging.

Last year the Moss Foundation awarded 3 scholarships, 4 teacher grants and renewed funding for our Summer Arts Education Program. I’d say that is a pretty good accomplishment, and I’d like to do it again. To help accomplish this, I will be hosting the 2023 Moss Foundation Dinner at my home in Waynesboro on Saturday, July 15th. Ticket sales will begin the second week of February on Eventbrite. I am so pleased that we have retained our caterer, Takeout 250, from last year. Pam and her staff have promised a fresh new menu which will be revealed with the ticket release. Of course, if I find out sooner I will share it with you.
