Maryland School for the Deaf is nestled among the old brick rowhouses in the historic area of Frederick Maryland. The school was established in 1868 with 34 students and is dedicated to providing free public education for deaf or hard-of-hearing children from birth through age 21. The featured building is Hessian barracks which dates back to the Revolutionary War era when it housed captured Hessian soldiers. The building now serves as a historical museum for the school.

Little Red Schoolhouse Revisited reminds us of times when children traveled by horse drawn carriage to learn in a one-room schoolhouse. The Little Red Schoolhouse in Poland, Ohio, was built in 1858 and served the community for 57 years. After the school closed in 1915, the building served many purposes, including a church and a women’s sewing circle to help during the war effort. The building is now maintained by the historical society.

Welcome Back features the Charter Oak School, Sparta, Illinois. Built in 1873, this eight-sided school was designed to provide improved lighting for the students. By 1953, the need for a one-room schoolhouse had declined and Charter Oaks closed. It is now on the National Register of Historical Places of America and has undergone major restoration.

Little Stone School depicts Wing Lake Schoolhouse that the residents in Bloomfield County, Michigan, had built in 1859. A stonemason from Ireland was building houses for wealthy people in that area at the time, and the residents decided to have him build a proper schoolhouse that would last for a very long time.
